Thomas Robert Malthus was a renowned cleric, economist and demographer, best known for his theory on overpopulation. Born in 1766 in Surrey, England, Malthus became famous for his controversial ideas on population growth and its potential consequences for society. In his influential work “An Essay on the Principle of Population,” first published in 1798, Malthus argued that population growth would always tend to outrun the food supply, leading to widespread poverty and hardship.
