Recent research in neuroscience has shed light on the different brain regions and networks that are responsible for our ability to empathise with others. In addition to the anterior insula and the mirror neuron system, the prefrontal cortex also plays a crucial role in empathy. This region of the brain is responsible for higher-order cognitive functions, such as perspective-taking and emotion regulation, which are essential for empathetic responses. Damage to the prefrontal cortex can lead to deficits in empathy, highlighting its importance in our ability to understand and empathise with others.

Overall, empathy is a complex emotion that involves multiple brain regions and networks working together to allow us to connect with and understand the feelings of others. By studying these empathy-related brain systems, researchers are gaining a better understanding of how empathy works in the brain and how we can foster and strengthen this important emotion in our relationships. Practising empathy not only benefits others but also enhances our own emotional well-being and helps to create a more compassionate and understanding society.
